Since 1978, when the Nike Tailwind model debuted, Nike was committed to one goal - improving the system of depreciation so that you feel like you’re walking on air. Aeronautics engineer Frank Rudy has developed and patented his idea of creating an amortization system for shoes, based on inert gas in a plastic polyurethane capsule. This idea became the basis of Nike's shock absorber air technology and has been continuously refined ever since.

However, the famous Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield proposed a radical idea – why not try not covering the Air Max technology that reduces its efficiency, but rather leaving it visible, which would increase the Air Max space and further improve comfort and shock absorption. The inspiration behind this idea was the charming Pompidou Center building in Paris today. All its structural elements, plumbing and air conditioning units, functional elements and wiring system, even all visitor transport facilities, which are normally hidden by contractors inside, have been raised to the outside of the Pompidou.

Earlier models such as the Air Max 2016 and Air Max 2017 used airbags as "mattresses" for the feet, while the Vapormax model has an airbag as an "engine", with air as specialized pistons that provide support in all the right places.

The Nike Vapormax model brought the company even closer to their goal. The Vapormax Flyknit running shoes are made from more than 39,000 parts and they are 113 g lighter than Air Max 2017. According to Kathy Gomez, vice president of Nike Amortization Technology Innovation, it took 15 tests to manufacture the sole for the Vapormax shoes.

The Vapormax sole was manufactured in a completely new way. The entire sole was made of thermoplastic polyurethane, and on its bottom the team of engineers managed to avoid additional layers of glue, foam and rubber for attaching individual parts.

Nike has tested several different VaporMax versions, that were evaluated by a number of runners. However, as you know, the low-top Nike Air Vapormax running shoes were released, because they met the expectations of many runners.
